Trend Observation: AI Agents, Microtransactions, and the Subscription Model
Subscription Fatigue VS. Loyalty of One-Time Purchases
The subscription model, promoted across industries worldwide, is actually causing me a significant fatigue. On social media influencers introducing how micro AI tools helps their work flow. However, I click into the link provided, it always ask for subscription to use, not even a free trial are provided. Conversely, software like Procreate, Obsidian, which adheres to a one-time purchase model, attracts a more loyal user base and a stronger creator ecosystem. This raises the question: Is the subscription model truly the most success business model for digital tools?
Decentralized Tool Ecosystem: The Breakup of Large Companies and the Rise of Studios
After pendemic, I feel many companies have employees gather around the world, giving rise to the trend of "studios." My friends company are completely work remotely none of his collogues are live in the same city. Recently, the raise of AI technologies, in my perspective, is accelerating this trend. People can vibe code any application or even come up with a good idea and run a start up.
In my opinion, this reflects a future market trend: the world no longer needs a single, super corporation to do everything, but rather a network of countless top-tier teams (studios) specializing in a single project.
The Fragmentation Dilemma of AI Tools
This trend of specialization is also reflected in the tools we use. Take AI-powered image and productivity software as an example: there are countless tools on the market, ranging from Stable Diffusion, Leonardo, Midjourney, Nano Banana, Grok to ChatGPT, and many more.
Each system has its own unique strengths, but from the user's perspective, it's impossible to subscribe to every system just to try it out or for a one-time specific need; that would be an enormous financial burden.
If future software can eliminate subscription models and adopt a "pay-per-use" model, requiring only a small amount of cryptocurrency or even stablecoin for settlement, this would be an excellent future trend for Users and AI Agents.
When AI Agents take over most cross-system, mechanical operations and begin "working" for humans, they will undoubtedly choose the tools most suitable for their current tasks.
The Dilemma of Traditional Credit Cards: If the AI Agent's owner is given credit card access to subscribe to all available tools, the owner will quickly go bankrupt.
The Advantages of Micro-transactions: When an AI Agent calls a specific tool (e.g., having Midjourney generate an image or GPT run a piece of code), only a few cents or micro-dollars of stablecoins are deducted from the user's virtual wallet, significantly reducing the user's financial burden.
This decentralized business model of "pay-per-use and automatic settlement" is the future ecosystem that allows countless professional AI tools and AI agents to truly coexist and operate.
